Hoka Clifton 9
Sizing & fit guide

Our verdict
True to size
The Hoka Clifton 9 fits true to size in length — order your normal running shoe size. The catch is width: like most Hokas, the toe box runs narrow and low-volume. Regular and narrow feet are fine true to size; if you have wide feet or want toe-box room, size up a half or buy the Wide version.

Two ways to fit it

Regular and narrow feet should buy true to size for the locked-in Hoka fit. Wide feet (or anyone wanting toe-box room) should size up a half or choose the Wide version.

Why the Hoka Clifton 9 fits this way

The Clifton 9 is Hoka's flagship cushioned daily trainer, and on length the consensus is true to size — buy your usual running size. Hoka's own size guide is notorious for suggesting a size smaller than people actually wear, so ignore it if it tells you to drop a full size; owners who followed their normal running size report a good fit with about a thumbnail of toe room.

The real story is width. Hoka builds a narrow, low-volume toe box into nearly all its shoes and the Clifton is no exception. Narrow and regular feet tend to love the locked-in fit, but wide-footed runners consistently find the forefoot tight. The fix runners reach for is either sizing up a half for a bit more toe room or buying the Wide — though note Hoka typically only widens the upper, not the midsole, so a Wide adds room but doesn't completely transform the platform.

It's worth knowing the Clifton is roomier than some Hokas in feel but the Bondi is roomier still, so if the Clifton's forefoot feels cramped, the Bondi is the more accommodating step up. Net: true to size in length for most people; size up a half or go Wide if you have wide feet or want more toe-box space.

Common scenarios

I wear US 10 in running shoes. What size Clifton 9?

US 10 — the Clifton 9 fits true to size in length. Ignore Hoka's size guide if it suggests going down. If you have wide feet, consider US 10.5 or the Wide for toe-box room.

Hoka's website told me to size down. Should I?

No. Hoka's guide routinely suggests a size smaller than people actually wear. Stick with your normal running size for the Clifton 9.

I have wide feet. Will the Clifton 9 fit?

The toe box runs narrow. Size up a half for more room, or buy the Wide version (it widens the upper, not the midsole). If it's still cramped, the roomier Bondi is a better bet.

How it compares to other models

  • Hoka Bondi 8 Medium confidence

The Bondi is the more cushioned, roomier-feeling shoe — if the Clifton's forefoot feels narrow, the Bondi is the more accommodating option at the same size

  • Hoka Mach 6 Medium confidence

Both fit true to size, but the Mach is the lighter, faster, lower-volume trainer with a tighter midfoot, while the Clifton is the softer, slightly more forgiving daily shoe

  • Hoka Arahi 7 Medium confidence

The Arahi is essentially the stability version of the Clifton with a similar true-to-size fit and narrow last; carry the same size between them
