Hoka Speedgoat 5
Sizing & fit guide
Two ways to fit it
Most runners should size up a half — the Speedgoat runs slightly small and you want toe room for descents. Narrow feet on mellow trails can stay true to size.

Why the Hoka Speedgoat 5 fits this way
The Speedgoat 5 is Hoka's benchmark trail shoe, and its fit reflects two things: it runs a touch small, and it carries Hoka's signature narrow toe box. The recurring guidance is to size up a half from your normal road size — "the SG is a little smaller than true to size" — both because the shoe runs slightly short and because trail running needs a bit of extra toe room for downhills, where your foot slides forward and your toes can hit the front.
Width is the other consideration. Owners love the cushioning and grip but repeatedly call out "the narrow toebox that Hoka insists on putting in 90% of their shoes." Wide-footed trail runners often need the Wide version, and even then Hoka's Wide mainly opens up the upper rather than the platform. If you're between sizes, round up: a half size up is the safest default for the Speedgoat, particularly for longer or steeper runs.
Narrow-footed runners who mostly do mellow trails can run true to size and enjoy a secure fit. But for most people, and especially for technical descents or wider feet, size up a half. Net: runs slightly small and narrow — size up a half from your road size.
Common scenarios
I wear US 10 in road running shoes. What size Speedgoat 5?
Try US 10.5. The Speedgoat runs slightly small and you want extra toe room for descents. If you have narrow feet and run mostly easy trails, US 10 can work.
Why size up for a trail shoe?
On downhills your foot slides forward and your toes hit the front. The Speedgoat also runs a hair short, so a half-size up protects your toes on steep, long descents.
I have wide feet. What should I do?
The Speedgoat has Hoka's narrow toe box. Buy the Wide version, and still consider a half-size up for descent room. Hoka's Wide widens the upper more than the platform.
How it compares to other models
- Hoka Clifton 9 Medium confidence
The Clifton (road) fits true to size while the Speedgoat (trail) runs slightly small — many runners go a half size up in the Speedgoat versus their Clifton size for downhill toe room
