Why the Nike Air Max 97 fits this way
The Air Max 97 is the Air Max model most consistently recommended to size up. The defining issue is the toe box: "I size up 1/2 for 97's. That toe box is a killer. AM 1's, 90's, Vapormaxes, etc. all size 9 with a thumb width of space in the toe box" — meaning the wearer is true to size in every other Air Max but has to go up a half specifically in the 97. Another confirms simply: "I usually size up half."
The cause is the 97's wrapped, bootie-like upper and low-volume forefoot. Unlike the roomy AM90, the 97 hugs the foot closely from midfoot to toe, so the same length that fits other Air Max models feels short and tight in the 97. The result is a near-consensus ½ up for comfortable length and toe room.
Net: size up a half from your normal Nike/Air Max size. Standard feet who like a snug athletic fit can take true size and accept the close wrap, but most wearers — and especially wide feet or high insteps — are happier with the half up. The upper has limited give, so don't count on break-in to fix a tight toe box.
